What’s Up Josh? – MLA President Josh Stone visits to brainstorm ways to up Academic Lib engagement

  • Josh couldn’t join us today due to a conflict
  • His main question -how do we get more membership and participation in MLA?
    • Institutional membership options
    • Less expensive membership fees
    • More representation could lead to better changes.  

President’s updates & Conference Updates

  • We tried for a fall program, but the office lost our proposal.
    • We have withdrawn the proposal, and will resubmit for January date
    • Program “New Opportunities for Academic Libraries: Student Success and the Student Employee” 
    • Keynote Carissa Tomlinson, past ACRL MD president and current Director of Student Experience, Learning, & Outreach at the University of Minnesota.
  • Leah Sims, our new Member Engagement Associate! Leah is currently working towards her Masters in Library and Information Science at the University of Maryland, and has a rich background in libraries, museums, and education. As the Member Engagement Associate, Leah will be the point person to assist with memberships, MLA Connect, programs, and CEUs.

      1. Looking into options for group/ institutional memberships, engaging with library leaders 
    4. MLA Connect
      1. This is the new message board/ social media system for MLA. 
      2. There is an ACRL Subgroup to this as well
      3. Please go in and introduce yourself and play around!
  3. Executive Board & Conference updates
    1. ACRL MD has a work plan with goals that will be created by October 1st.
      1. As always, outreach and engagement are at the top level
    2. ACRL Exec Board Nominations due in October

    3. Conference Planning
      1. MLA presentation proposal forms live August 19th
      2. Poster presentation proposals will come later in the year. 
      3. Theme this year “Level Up”
      4. If you have any ideas for Keynote speakers please let Brianna (add email) know, they still looking for ideas. 
  4. 2022-23 Roadmap & Discussion Group
    1. Is this time (Thursday at 11am) still a good time for the group? SHould we alternate?
      1. No issues raised, keep at this time. 
    2. Podcast Club is returning starting with the September meeting!
      1. Articles/ Podcasts will be sent out closer to the meeting gates
        1. September Article – “Nice White Meetings” Unpacking Absurd Library Bureaucracy through a Critical Race Theory Lens
      2. If you have any ideas for podcasts or articles, please send them our way. 
    3. Group Social Event
      1. Last year we did a tour of LoC which was very popular.
        1. 20 people attended, self-guided tour of Jefferson in the AM, lunch, then the PM had two groups of 10 for guided back room tours. 
      2. Ideas for this year?
    4. Back to School Program
      1. This has typically been promoted in the fall, sent to library and other ischools, letting current students and new grads have an opportunity to present to the group research or projects they’re currently working on. 
      2. This is virtual, so students from all over the country are welcome!
      3. Do we have any ideas towards this? Is anyone interested in managing or spearheading outreach for this? If so please reach out! 
    5. Josh Stone (MLA) and Andrew Pace (USMAI) will be joining us for the September meeting. 
    6. Back Up chat and reference
      1. A few folks use Springshare libchat service/ libanswers global chat, with good reviews
      2. Some folks use/ used to use AskUs Now, and some folks have no current alternative service. 
      3. Towson and LNDL use library help, LNDL is part of AJCU consortia for this.
      4. Is this something we could bring up to USMAI or a higher level?
